The Spanish Civil War

(A Charlie's War Alpha Test)

The Spanish Civil War widely known in Spain simply as The Civil War or The War, took place from 1936 to 1939 and was fought between the Republicans, who were loyal to the democratic, left-leaning and a relatively urban Second Spanish Republic in an alliance of convenience with the Anarchists, and the Nationalists, a falangist, Carlist and a largely aristocratic conservative group led by General Francisco Franco. Although the war is often portrayed as a struggle between democracy and fascism, some historians consider it more accurately described as a struggle between leftist revolution and rightist counterrevolution. Ultimately, the Nationalists won, and Franco then ruled Spain for the next 36 years, from April 1939 until his death in November 1975.

This time history may

'play'-out differently

Charlie's wars first outing will see three players thrown into the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War. The idea of this will be to stress test the campaign rules and to get a general sense of how the main game will play out in the future. The map below shows players starting positions.

Meet the players

The Spanish Republicans

(Played by Little T)

Democratically elected and viewed by France and The Soviet Union as the rightful air to the throne of Spain, the Spanish republicans start in the strong position of holding both the production producing cities in Spain. Although Madrid lies in a precarious position. Holding these cities may prove vital to the war effort as their rivals have powerful and deep pocketed supporters.

The Spanish Nationalists

(Played by Big Steve)

Powered and inspired by Fascism the right wing Nationalists have risen up to claim Spain for themselves. Germany, Italy and the Vatican all have given aid and backing to the rebellion. Their starting position is a little shaky, for a start they have no capital, they will have to appeal to neighbours to act as a proxy or look to smash their way into Madrid in order to gain a foothold.

(Played by Nosy J)

Portugal quickly declared themselves allies of the nationalists and provided a proxy capital for them. History does not need repeat itself if Nosy J so chooses. Joining either side may grant Portugal access to the arms of that sides supporters. However, what's to stop them striking their own deal and trying to grab some more land?

The Rest of the World

(A.I. Controlled, to an extent)

The rest of the world will stress test the games A.I. system, reacting to diplomatic events, getting involved and supplying aid. Small countries and skirmishes can become a game of chess for the major nations, it may be smart for the clashing nations to appeal to their neighbours for help. What may not be so smart is trying to take them on, powerful armies could be called in to face you and control of the oceans around the peninsula are in the hands of the French and British.
